< p>The Hanna Instruments HI 981409 is a compact total dissolved solids (TDS) and temperature tester used in hydroponics, greenhouses, and nurseries, and has Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), automatic calibration, a single-line LCD screen, a probe with protective sheath, a water-resistant outer casing that floats, and a molded eye to hang the meter. TDS, such as salts and minerals, contribute to the conductivity of a solution. A TDS meter measures substance conductivity and converts it to a TDS reading. TDS readings are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists in aquaculture, agriculture, hydroponics, and water-testing, and for scientific applications.

The single line LCD screen shows the current measurement. The meter has automatic calibration at 1500ppm through an on/off button on the front when placed in the appropriate calibration solution. The meter has a water-resistant housing, a flat back to prevent rolling when placed on a table, can be wall mounted using the molded eye, and floats. The meter comes with a replaceable HI 1220 probe with Deutsches Institut fr Normung (DIN) connector and a protective sheath. The probe measures 24cm (9.4") and can be used to mix fertilizer solution. Two 1.5V AA batteries provide approximately 3000 hours of continuous use. The meter switches off after five minutes of inactivity to save battery life. The meter also comes with a solution sachet.
