The Atago 2791 Master-URC/N is a handheld, portable, clinical refractometer that has dual-scale measurement of urine specific gravity (SG) 1.000 to 1.050, and refractive index (nD) 1.333 to 1.356, has automatic temperature compensation (ATC), clear optics, and is housed in a plastic, Ingress-Protection (IP)-65 rated body. A refractometer measures the refractive index of a solution in a sample, converts it to substance concentration in units of percent by weight, and displays the results. Handheld refractometers are commonly used in the culinary, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, educational, geological, chemical, and ecological industries, and for water-testing applications.

This refractometer is housed in a polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) plastic body for use with salty and acidic samples. Its optics system provides higher contrast and clarity than the previous Master-URC/NM model, the URICON-NE. It has a telescope-shaped, streamlined design for gripping, and a spoon-shaped tip for smooth sampling. The outer shell grip is ridged for gripping, and easy to clean, which reduces the possibility of food and sample entrapment, avoiding contamination and bacterial growth. The unit is Ingress-Protection (IP)-65 rated for protection against dust and water jets.

The 2791 Master-URC/N features ATC for immediate and accurate readings, regardless of ambient temperature. Calibration can be controlled and adjusted with an exposed calibration screw and an included specialized screwdriver, although other items can be used to unscrew the unit. However, the unit retains its water-resistance. Ambient light illuminates the scale, and no additional power source is required. The analog salinity scale features a bright, high-contrast display for clear visibility of the boundary and memory lines intersection. Samples are viewed through a monocular, focusable, cushioned eyepiece. The unit includes a protective plastic storage case with a foam cut-out insert to cushion the instrument.
